Welcome

August 26, 2014

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to 3rd grade!! We have an exciting, busy and fun year planned for our third graders. We hope this letter will take care of some of the questions that come up quickly in the school year.

Students will travel from class to class this year. Each class will last approximately 90 minutes. Third graders will have Mrs. Crawshaw for Science and Social Studies, Mrs. Jarvis for Language Arts (reading, grammar, etc) and Mrs. Parsons for Math. Mrs. Heller is our third grade intervention specialist. Students will also have library/technology, PE (gym), music and art on a rotating basis. Students will receive a schedule to keep in their homework folder.

Students will use a planner this year to write weekly assignments. Students should carry this planner to classes. They also will be instructed to bring the planner home daily. This is another way you can check to see upcoming assignments and special activities. Planners will be updated each Monday, or the beginning of the week if we do not have school on a Monday.

There will be homework packets coming home on Fridays along with the newsletter. These will include Math and Language Arts (reading, writing, and comprehension) practice. Students will need to complete this work and return it by the last school day of the following week. **At times there may also be other homework - such as to study for an upcoming test or when work has not been completed.

Weekly third grade newsletters will be sent home and you will also be able to see the newsletters on the teacher web pages of the www.nlschools.org website. The newsletter will include the concepts students will be learning in class as well as homework expectations and special reminders.

If your child is absent from school, look for a note about work he/she missed as well as the work which will be sent home to be completed.

We have high expectations for student learning and classroom behavior. Students are expected to be KIND, SAFE, COOPERATIVE and RESPECTFUL at all times and in all situations. Students will be expected to come to class prepared to listen, read, learn, discuss and practice the skills and concepts presented. We will communicate any lack of meeting these expectations via a behavior/communication referral.

Lots of important paperwork is coming home at the beginning of the year. Please be sure to read it over, complete & sign it, and return it as soon as possible. The papers we need returned include:
